An authentic cottage with a rustic aesthetic, nestled in the suburbs of a West Sussex town, provides the setting for this design project. Our client envisioned a warm and inviting home where family and friends could come together, enjoy quality time, and entertain. Working closely with the client, we established a clear design direction and explored a range of layout possibilities to unlock the full potential of the open-plan space, creating a home that feels both welcoming and effortlessly functional.

The space we were working with was a thoughtfully designed extension, created in complete harmony with the original building. Its magnificent structural timber beams were a striking architectural feature, bringing both scale and character to the interior. Carefully selected and specially manufactured to evoke the beauty of antique timber, they were deliberately left unfinished. Their weathered appearance and subtle imperfections lend them a sense of history, as though they have naturally aged and gathered the marks of time.

With this vision in mind, we approached the furniture selection with the same thoughtful balance, bringing together traditional, retro-inspired pieces with more minimal, streamlined designs. This considered mix created a layered aesthetic that sits somewhere between eclectic and rustic, giving the interior a distinctive sense of character and individuality. The carefully curated palette of materials, textures and colours further reinforces the overall design direction, bringing cohesion and depth to the space.

We are proud to have preserved a sense of openness and spaciousness, allowing the interior to connect seamlessly with the surrounding garden and beautiful views. The statement elements sit harmoniously alongside one another, each complementing rather than competing, resulting in a characterful, welcoming and highly functional home designed to stand the test of time. Our clients were delighted with the finished result, feeling that their personal style had been thoughtfully captured and aligned with the character of the property.
